Learn the steps needed to install a solar array on your home and connect to our meter for solar credit and latest MGED MLP Solar Rebate.

If you are an MGED customer considering a solar system for your home, we have important information that you need to know.

If you're just starting out, here are some helpful resources to learn more about:

Steps for MGED Approval to Install & Connect

If you install a solar array, your system will be connected to your home's electrical panel and our electric distribution system through our electric meter. You'll need MGED approval first.

Step One: MGED Approval

To make sure that the systems will connect safely and reliably, our technical staff needs to review and approve the design and final installation. When you've found a solar contractor and decided on the system to install, you and your contractor will submit the application below. If your system is installed before our approval of the application, you run the risk of needing costly changes.

After your system is operating, our meter measures both the electricity you buy from MGED and the excess electricity sent back through the MGED meter. This meter will record both amounts shown on your MGED bill. We will not meter the total amount produced by your energy system, most of which will be used inside your home. Your solar installer should install a separate meter for your solar system. MGED does not install that meter. Learn More About the Solar Credit on Your Bill (PDF).

  1. Submit the following by email:
    • Simplified Application/Interconnection Agreement (PDF) for Net Metered Electrical Generation
      • Do not save the form. Fill in this form and print as a PDF to send in an email
    • A one-line drawing of your generation system (Sample (PDF)) showing that it meets our system installation requirements
    • Specifications showing the materials (panels and inverters) to be installed meet all required codes as noted in the agreement
  2. Approval confirmation - you will receive notice from MGED directly that your system layout and materials have been approved for installation. We will share this information with your contractor as well
  3. If approved, MGED will charge your account a $250 application fee, payable on your next bill.
  4. Apply for the MLP Solar Rebate - Your system design must meet specific program requirements for size limit, azimuth and shading to qualify for this rebate of $.60 per watt. In order to ensure that you are eligible for a rebate, we strongly recommend that you wait an additional 4 to 6 weeks for pre-approval of the rebate application from our rebate agency, Energy New England before starting the installation. Apply online or call 888-772-4242 for more information.
  5. Electrical Permit - You (or your contractor/installer) must obtain an electrical permit from your town wiring inspector.
  6. Electrical Inspection/town wiring inspector - After the system installation is complete, you or your contractor should call the town wiring inspector for a final inspection.
  7. System Inspection/MGED Engineer - Our technician will schedule our inspection prior to turn-on. Our Engineer will review the system and approve for operation. MGED finalizes the Certificate of Completion - we will then send you a Permission to Operate letter for your records.
  8. If you've qualified for a MLP Solar Rebate, we will verify operation of your system with Energy New England who will arrange for payment of your rebate within 8 weeks of completion. MGED will retain all future rights to SRECs as a condition of providing the rebate.
