February is Black History Month

Lewis Latimer Square

Lewis H. Latimer was an American inventor who helped create the electric industry as we know it today. He is best known for his improvements to Thomas Edison’s light bulb and simplification of the production process. He also worked with Alexander Graham Bell on his telephone patent and invented an early prototype of the air conditioner.

His hometown connection? Latimer worked for the Edison Electric Company when it was combined with the Thomson-Houston Electric Company in 1892. In that year, Thomson-Houston agreed to sell of one of their local electric companies, their Middleboro plant, to the town which took possession of the plant in 1893. The town also bought the gas company, and the rest is history.
