Our beloved friend, Jim Collins passed away peacefully at his home in Sarasota, Florida, on Friday, April 20, 2018. He was born on December 26, 1940 in Boston and grew up in Somerville, playing quarterback and basketball with his friends at Cherry Park. Jim graduated from Bentley College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting and a Master’s Degree in Finance. In 1966, while still in college, he married Mary Guilderson of Arlington known affectionately as his “lovely Mary” and they settled in Lexington.
Jim’s career flourished in the natural gas industry where he became Vice President of Rates for Algonquin Gas Transmission. For health reasons, he stepped away from that position, enjoying an early retirement and time with his second true love, golf.
In 1988, Jim was coaxed out of retirement to become MGED’s Rates Analyst, and eventually the General Manager, or “Supreme Commander” as he joked to all. He guided the utility through many productive years, creating the practices that provide excellent service and affordable rates for all MGED customers today. Jim was regarded as a very compassionate, fair man who worked with every department employee as a colleague, guiding them with intelligence and humor. He retired in 2009 to move to Sarasota, Florida to be with his family and pursue his passion for playing golf.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Mary; his son Sean and his wife Christine; his son David and his wife Sarah; 11 grandchildren, and his brother, Richard Collins and his wife Donna. Funeral services were held on Friday, April 27, 2018, in Sarasota, FL.
Jim, our beloved friend and Supreme Commander, will be sadly missed.
